"E.M."   is Elie Moneuse.  One of the founders of the original "M&D" mark (Moneuse & Duparquet).   The M&D founders split up in the 1880s and became two different firms.  "E.M." and "L.F.D&H."  (Louis F. Duparquet & Pierre Huot).   They went off in their own directions for a few years and then both M and D died.  Their sons picked up the pieces and put them back together again as "D.H.&M. Co."   (Duparquet, Hout & Moneuse) and this firm was very successful right up the depression in the 30's.
